These do not last long in my house- In fact, in the middle of taking pictures for it my 4 and 5 year olds were grabbing them off the tray! These go great with my homemade ketchup as well!

Ingredients

  • 2 yellow or vidalia onions

  • 1 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk
(At time of writing this recipe, ‘Original Oatly Oatmilk’ was listed green/safe on the FIG app for alpha-gal.)

  • 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
(At time of writing this recipe, ‘Jovial Organic Einkorn All-Purpose Flour’ was listed green/safe on the FIG app for alpha-gal.)

  • 1/2 cup corn starch
(At time of writing this recipe, ‘Baker’s Corner 100% Pure Corn Starch’ was listed green/safe on the FIG app for alpha-gal.)

  • 1 1/2 Tsp paprika

  • 1/2 Tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 Tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 Tsp salt

  • Pepper to taste

  • Oil for frying

Directions

  • Soak the Onion Rings
  • Mix oat milk and lemon juice in, ideally, a container that is wide with an airtight lid(Think medium to large Tupperware). This will allow you to use less oat milk for soaking while having the ability to give the container a good shake to ensure even soaking! (Our alpha gal safe products are sometimes costly, so I try to avoid waste.) If this isn’t a concern, just make sure you have enough oat milk to coat!
  • Peel and cut onion rings into 1/2 inch rings.
  • Add onion rings and let soak 15-20 minutes (or up to 1 hour).
  • Mix the Dry Coating
  • In a medium bowl, mix flour, cornstarch and seasonings.
  • This is usually where I like to start heating my oil. It needs to be 350-375ºF degrees in a deep skillet or a pot.
  • Coat the Rings
  • Remove onions from soak – Do not pat them dry.
  • Dredge into the dry mix, pressing to adhere. You have the option here to move the ring back into the oat milk and re-coat with the dry mix to double dredge- I highly recommend this! Just keep in mind you might have to make more dry mix depending on how big your onions are.
  • Fry ‘Em
  • Fry rings in batches 2-4 minutes per side, or until as golden brown as you like them!
  • Drain on a wire rack or paper towel.
  • Want the Air Fryer option?
  • Spray rings generously with avocado oil spray. Air fry at 400ºF for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Dip ‘Em!
  • Try these in my Homemade Ketchup!
  • Or maple mustard, garlic aioli, or just enjoy the taste of good crispy onion rings. Enjoy!

The only Knife I’ve used in over 7 years! – Worth every penny if you plan to be in the kitchen.

I love this unbleached, ancient grain all purpose flour! – I know flour can be a hot topic online, especially when navigating alpha-gal. This specific flour is marked green/safe on the Fig app at the time of writing, and I’ve personally used it with success. That said – always do your own research, and when in doubt, don’t risk it. Everyone’s body reacts differently with AGS.

My fried food resting place combo-so it doesn’t lose it’s crispy!
