Homemade Ketchup (Alpha-Gal Friendly and Dairy Free)
Ketchup was one of the first “why am I reacting to this” moments I had with Alpha-Gal Syndrome. It led me down a huge rabbit hole of how ingredients are processed, and gave me a big appreciation of watching out for bone char processed sugar. This was always one of the first recipes I wanted to share because it was one of those moments of clarity for me…If the store doesn’t make it…that’s fine, I’ll make it myself!

minutesYa’ll, I had nasty allergic reaction to store-bought ketchup and I decided right then, ‘ketchup will be homemade at my house!’ This recipe is quick, easily scaled up, and just what you need for that french fry or meatloaf recipe. (No bone char filtered sugar here!!)Tell me what you think about it when you try it!
Ingredients
6 oz of tomato paste (At time of writing this recipe, ‘Cento Tomato Paste’ was listed green/safe on the FIG app for alpha-gal.)
1/2 cup water
4 TBSP maple syrup(At time of writing this recipe, ‘Maple Valley Cooperative Organic Maple Syrup’ was listed green/safe on the FIG app for alpha-gal.)
2 & 1/2 Tsp white vinegar
1 Tsp salt
1/2 Tsp garlic powder ( or more if you prefer)
1/2 Tsp onion powder (or more if you prefer)
Pinch of ground cinnamon
(optional) Pinch of ground allspice
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well.
- On medium heat, add to sauce pan and stir constantly for 4-5 min until it slightly thickens and darkens slightly.
- Always test for vinegar/sweetness. If you feel like it’s missing that “pop of brightness” add a bit more of the vinegar. We prefer a sweeter ketchup at my house so I almost always add a little bit more of the maple syrup.
- Add to a clean air-tight container and store for up to 2 weeks in fridge; refrigerate immediately. Always use a clean spoon to prevent contamination. Never leave ketchup out on the counter as this has no preservatives in it!
